Hell is a place of darkness and pain, where no light or hope can reach. Hell is divided into nine circles, each one corresponding to a different type of sin. The second circle of hell is where the lustful are punished. It is a place of chaos and violence, where a fierce wind blows constantly. The wind represents the passion that drove the lustful to sin. It tosses them around like leaves, preventing them from finding any peace or stability. The lustful are naked and exposed, unable to hide their shame or guilt. They cling to each other in a vain attempt to satisfy their desire, but they only feel more anguish and regret. The second circle of hell is also where some of the most famous lovers in history are condemned, such as Paolo and Francesca, Tristan and Isolde, and Helen and Paris. They are examples of how love can lead to sin and ruin.
