Baron Edmund Allenson governs Ionia County from his rustic timber manor known as Hall's Hill, located atop a bluff overlooking the village of Muir. His father first traded with the Odawa bands that inhabited this territory before working as a French voyageur himself. Baron Allenson was born in Montreal but spent most summers around the Great Lakes. As the Ionia region opened to American settlers in the 1820s, the Baron returned to claim lands along the Grand River that he remembered fondly from childhood travels. He embraced pioneer farm life, learning techniques for distilling, milling, and brewing to add value to local crops. Prospering through the early boom years, he built Hall’s Hill to welcome newcomers also seeking opportunity far from crowded eastern cities. With civic expansion in mind, Baron Allenson continues facilitating wagon routes, bridges and canalways across Ionia while personally experimenting with apple varietals, potcheen techniques imported from Ireland, and value-added production of other duchy yields. Now entering his 60s, his energetic engagement endears him to Ionia’s rising merchant class.
