In Akutagawa Ryunosuke's short story for children, "The Spider's Thread," Kandata sees a spider's thread hanging from the sky in the dark of hell. He thinks that if he climbs up this thread he can get out of hell, so he grabs the thread and starts to climb. However, halfway through, he gets tired and looks down, and sees many sinners following him. Kandata thinks that the weight of the thread will break if he continues like this, so he shouts at the people below, "This spider's thread is mine," "Who did you all hear about this climb up here," and "Get down! Get down." At that moment, the spider's thread breaks right above Kandata, and he falls back to the bottom of hell.
