In a creative initiative to enhance the commuting experience, Nexus has introduced poetry to the platforms of Longbenton station in Newcastle. Following a National Poetry Day competition, hundreds of poets submitted their works, with four winning entries now showcased prominently. The overall winner, Claire Lynn, expressed her excitement as her poem, "Crossing to Lindisfarne," was unveiled, celebrating the beauty of local landscapes. Judge Alice Mullen praised Lynn's work as a true homage to the journey, hoping it would inspire travelers to engage with poetry. Since 2021, Longbenton has embraced poetry, initially displaying pandemic-themed pieces, and continues to transform the station into a cultural hub. Nexus customer services director Huw Lewis emphasized the importance of placing art in unexpected public spaces, aiming to introduce poetry to a broader audience. This initiative not only beautifies the station but also invites commuters to reflect on their own journeys through the lens of art.
