Elijah was a prophet in the Kingdom of Israel during the reign of King Ahab and his wife, Jezebel, who were notorious for leading Israel into the worship of Baal, a pagan god. Elijah's story is primarily found in the books of 1 Kings and 2 Kings in the Old Testament.Elijah's Early MinistryElijah first appears in 1 Kings 17, where he delivers a message from God to King Ahab, declaring that there would be a severe drought in the land as a punishment for the people's idolatry. After delivering this message, Elijah goes into hiding by the brook of Cherith, where he is miraculously fed by ravens. When the brook dries up, God sends Elijah to Zarephath, where a widow provides for him. In return, God performs miracles through Elijah, including multiplying the widow's flour and oil so that they do not run out, and raising her son from the dead.The Confrontation on Mount CarmelOne of the most famous episodes in Elijah's life is his confrontation with the prophets of Baal on Mount Carmel, found in 1 Kings 18. After three years of drought, Elijah returns to challenge Ahab and the prophets of Baal. He proposes a contest to prove who is the true God—Yahweh or Baal. Both sides prepare a sacrifice, but they are not to light the fire. Instead, they must call upon their god to send fire from heaven to consume the offering.The prophets of Baal pray and perform rituals all day, but nothing happens. When it's Elijah's turn, he repairs the altar of the Lord, places the sacrifice on it, and even drenches it with water. He then prays to God, and fire falls from heaven, consuming the sacrifice, the wood, the stones, and even the water. This miraculous event leads the people to acknowledge Yahweh as the true God. Elijah then orders the execution of the prophets of Baal.
