Sagittarius is associated with Chiron, the wisest of the centaurs, half man, half horse. Known for his kindness and wisdom, Chiron was a mentor to many Greek heroes. One day, while hunting, Chiron was accidentally wounded by a poisoned arrow from Heracles. Since Chiron was immortal, he could not die, but he suffered unbearable pain. In an act of selflessness, Chiron asked Zeus to let him die to free him from the pain and allow Prometheus to be freed from his punishment. Zeus, moved, placed Chiron in the sky as the constellation Sagittarius, symbolizing nobility and sacrifice.
