Punchline, whose real name is Alexis Kaye, is a supervillain in the DC Comics universe, primarily associated with the Joker as his dedicated accomplice. Created by writer James Tynion IV and artist Jorge Jiménez, she debuted in Year of the Villain: Hell Arisen #3 (February 2020) with a cameo appearance, followed by her full introduction and naming in Batman (Vol. 3) #89 (April 2020). Originally a disillusioned student at Snyder College, Alexis encountered the Joker during a high school field trip when he hijacked a television studio, an event that profoundly influenced her worldview. She later developed her own variant of Joker venom, murdered her college dean to demonstrate her commitment, and earned the Joker's trust, adopting the Punchline persona as a calculated and ideologically aligned partner.

Unlike Harley Quinn, who represents chaotic affection and emotional dependency on the Joker, Punchline embodies a colder, more intellectual devotion, viewing the Joker's philosophy of anarchy as a profound truth rather than mere madness. During the "Joker War" storyline in 2020, she served as his primary lieutenant, engaging in brutal confrontations with Batman, Harley Quinn, and other heroes while employing her skills in toxicology, knife combat, and acrobatics. Following the Joker War, Punchline faced capture and trial for her crimes, explored in the one-shot Punchline #1 (2020) and subsequent stories that delved into her radicalization. In 2022, she received a limited series, Punchline: The Gotham Game, where she distanced herself from the Joker and assumed leadership of Gotham's Royal Flush Gang, establishing greater independence.
