Norman Helmet (Flux)

The Norman helmet, also known as the conical helmet, is a distinctive piece of early medieval armor that was integral to the Norman warrior’s identity. It features a conical shape, designed to deflect blows and provide maximum protection with minimal weight. Made from riveted iron or steel, the helmet is crowned with a slightly pointed top and usually includes a prominent nasal guard—a vertical strip of metal that extends down over the nose to protect the face during combat. The helmet’s open design allows the wearer clear visibility and hearing, crucial in the chaos of battle. Sometimes, the helmet is lined with leather for comfort and secured with a chin strap. Its unadorned, functional appearance conveys an aura of rugged practicality, though higher-ranking Normans might have worn versions with more refined construction or subtle decorative elements. This helmet was famously worn during the Norman conquest, exemplified in the Bayeux Tapestry.
