About the character:

Emilia Ríos is a Chilean politician and political scientist, member of the Democratic Revolution party. She is the current mayor of Ñuñoa, a commune in the Santiago Metropolitan Region, since June 2021. She was previously a councilor of the same commune from 2016 to 2021 1. Emilia Ríos was born in Santiago on May 20, 1988. She studied at the Maya School and the Carmela Carvajal de Prat High School. She graduated from the Catholic University of Chile with a degree in political science in 2014 and obtained a master’s degree in Government and Public Management from the University of Chile in 2020.

She joined the Democratic Revolution party in 2014 and ran for councilor of Ñuñoa in the 2016 municipal elections, winning with 2,537 votes. She chaired the commissions of Women and Gender Equality and Environment in the municipal council. She was the candidate of the Frente Amplio coalition for mayor of Ñuñoa in the 2021 municipal elections, facing a divided opposition and a single candidate from the ruling coalition Chile Vamos. She received the support of the local branch of the Socialist Party, despite having another candidate from their coalition, Juan Pablo Sáez from the Christian Democratic Party.

Emilia Ríos won the election with 31.85% of the votes, defeating Guido Benavides from National Renewal by 2,741 votes. She took office as mayor on June 28, 2021, at the age of 33. As mayor, Emilia Ríos has pledged to review the building permits issued by the previous administration and to initiate a new process of urban planning for Ñuñoa. She has also expressed her commitment to social and environmental issues, such as gender equality, recycling, and public transportation.
