Leo Zi, also known as Laozi or Lao-Tse, is considered the creator of Taoism, one of China's most influential philosophies and religions. Born around the sixth century B.C., Leo Zi's life is shrouded in mystery and legend, and it's hard to separate the historical facts from the mythology that developed around him. However, his most famous work, the "Tao Te Ching", is widely considered the basis of Taoist thought. Leo Zi believed in the existence of a universal principle called "Tao," which can be translated as "The Way" or "The Flow." He saw the Tao as the primordial force that permeates everything that exists in the universe. For Leo Zi, the Tao is elusive and beyond rational comprehension, but it can be experienced and followed. In the "Tao Te Ching," Leo Zi offers practical advice on how to live in harmony with the Tao. He emphasizes the importance of simplicity, detachment, non-action (Wu Wei), and spontaneity. Leo Zi believed that human society was out of balance due to the excess of rules, hierarchies, and material desires, and that the way to peace and happiness was to return to simple nature and flow with the natural course of things. One of the key ideas of Taoism is the concept of "Wu Wei," which can be translated as "not doing" or "acting without acting." It means acting in harmony with the flow of the universe, rather than resisting or forcing things. Leo Zi likened this to the flow of a river, which follows its course naturally, skirting obstacles effortlessly. Following the principle of Wu Wei involves letting go of forced action and allowing life to flow with ease. Another important aspect of Taoism is the quest for spiritual immortality. Leo Zi believed that by following the path of the Tao, practitioners could achieve a state of wholeness and transcendence.
