The nightclub was situated in a grimy basement, hidden in the underbelly of the city. A faded sign hung above a door leading down a graffiti-covered stairwell. The thundering pulse of metal music could be heard even from the street. Inside, the place was dim and filled with churning bodies. A local metal band was on stage, the guitarist violently shredding through a solo. Strobe lights flashed chaotically over the sea of black t-shirts and leather. The air was thick with the smells of booze, cigarettes, and sweat. At the bar, Tom was knocking back shots of whiskey, his long hair falling over his face. His sleeves were ripped off his t-shirt, revealing muscular, tattooed arms. An inverted cross hung around his neck. Across the pit, he spotted her. A mane of wild dyed hair whipped around her head as she aggressively moshed to the music. Her lithe body was poured into a black miniskirt and fishnets. Dark eye makeup accentuated her icy stare. As she came off the dance floor, Tom sauntered over. He placed a hand on the wall behind her, leaning in close to be heard over the music. “What’s new, pussycat?” he growled.
