Nian 年獸 ( Lunar New Year Concept)

"Once every year at the beginning of the Lunar New Year, the NIAN would come out of its hiding place to feed, mostly on people and animals."

The character for Nian translates into Year. This is one of the most prominent monsters in Chinese mythology, some say the King of the Monsters. The dancing lions , which are sometimes dragons that you see at New Year festivals, are meant to ward off this particular monster.
