Woodcut and linocut are both printmaking techniques that involve carving an image into a flat surface to create a relief design for printing. In woodcut, the image is carved into a block of wood, usually with the grain of the wood serving as a distinctive element of the artwork. Linocut, on the other hand, uses a linoleum block as the surface, which is easier to carve than wood. Both styles share the essence of bold, graphic simplicity, with artists using gouges and knives to remove material from the block and leave behind the lines and shapes they want to print. The resulting prints often exhibit a striking contrast between the inked areas and the white paper, and the process allows for a range of expressive textures and marks that give these art forms their distinctive character.
