Round Fans (Tuánshàn), a traditional Han Chinese craft and art form, are circular in shape with frames typically made of silk, satin, gauze, or even luxurious fabrics like brocade and kesi (silk tapestry). The fan surface is often adorned with intricate embroidery, hand-painted designs, or calligraphy, depicting landscapes, pavilions, figures, flowers, birds, or poetic verses. Handles may be crafted from wood, bamboo, or bone.
Emerging after feather fans but before folding fans, round fans date back to the Xia, Shang, and Zhou dynasties (c. 2070–256 BCE), making them one of China’s oldest cultural artifacts.
