The landscape at this entrance is desolate and dark, full of storms and wind that sweep away the damned souls. Dante uses these elements to emphasize the suffering and despair of the inhabitants of Hell. The River Acheron: To reach the true entrance to Hell, souls must cross the river Acheron, led by the ferryman Charon. This river separates the world of the living from Hell and serves as a boundary beyond which there is no return.
