Painting of a boat and a cabin on a lake with people in it

The Duchy of Alcona Located in the northern reaches of the kingdom, the Duchy of Alcona is a remote but bountiful region dotted with small hamlets and rugged homesteads. Ruled by Duke Blackmore from the modest castle Blackmore Keep, Alcona provides lumber, furs, fish, and game to the kingdom. Dense old-growth forests dominate the landscape, with logging camps harvesting timber along the Sturgeon and Thunder Bay Rivers. Trappers and hunters roam the woods and wetlands, providing pelts and meat. Sturgeon fishing is plentiful in the cold freshwater lakes which were carved by ancient glaciers. The hardy folk of Alcona are accustomed to long, frigid winters, banding together in their isolated communities. With no major towns, Ducal rule is loose, with village councils and clerics holding sway over local affairs. Roads are muddy trails through the forests, nearly impassable in the spring thaws. While lacking in refinement, Alcona provides the basic resources for kingdom's growth. Its timber fortifies castle walls, its furs and pelts clothe nobles, and its game fills the royal kitchens. In return Duke Blackmore rules with autonomy, guarding the kingdom’s northern flank but leaving its rustic people to their own devices.
