Loafers originated from a shallow-mouthed shoe worn by Norwegian shepherds, which was called the "loafer". G.H. Bass improved on this design by removing the buckles and laces, leaving only a hollow belt. Interestingly, students found that a one-cent coin could be inserted into the gap in the belt, solving the embarrassment of finding change in a phone booth. Thus, the name "penny loafers" was born. This little story is fascinating and makes loafers even more unique.
