A pale glow emerges on the frigid horizon as Pluto slowly rotates into the distant sunlight. You're standing on cratered plains of nitrogen ice and carbon monoxide snow, bundled up against temperatures approaching -400°F. This is the distant frontier of the solar system. The sunlight at this distance is just bright enough to illuminate the alien landscape around you. Methane snow glitters under the creeping dawn. Looking up, the Sun is no more than a very bright star in Pluto's hazy sky. But you watch as that pinprick of light changes the whole character of the icy scenery. Shadows sharpen. The reddish tholin surface takes on a rich, complex hue. Exotic ices you've never seen before reflect the morning rays. As day breaks on this tiny, frozen world 3.7 billion miles from the Sun, you marvel at its striking geology carved by aeons of impacts. You reflect on how far you are from everything familiar. The rising Sun affirms that you are still under the same star that gives life to your faraway home planet.
