Locusts were the 8th plague sent by God to convince Pharaoh to free the Israelites from slavery. A huge swarm of locusts came from the east and covered all of Egypt, devouring all remaining crops and vegetation that had survived the previous plagues of hail and pestilence. The locusts ate every plant that had grown from the soil and stripped all leaves, fruits, and bark from trees and shrubs. Nothing green remained. The locust plague further destroyed the Egyptian economy and agricultural system that was already damaged from the previous plagues. Pharaoh's officials begged him to let the Israelites go to stop the plagues, but he still refused after the locusts left. The locusts emphasised God's power over Pharaoh and showed that Egypt's gods were powerless to stop the plagues.
