The shiba (or shiba inu) is a breed of dog native to Japan. It is a small, spitz-like dog. A very old breed, the shiba almost became extinct at the beginning of the 20th century, due to competition from English hunting dogs. In the 1920s, efforts were made to preserve the original shiba type. Hair: harsh and very rough, with a softer, denser undercoat. Color: various colors are accepted, including red, black or red sesame and black and tan. Sesame means that very black hairs are mixed in with the rest of the hair, especially on the back. Shibas Inu can be found in cream and white or pinto (white over more than 50% of the body with asymmetrical patches), but these are not part of the breed standard. Head: broad forehead and fairly thick muzzle, tapering towards the front. The nose is black. Ears: fairly small, triangular in shape, erect and tilted forward. Body: solid, with straight back. Muscles are well developed, but the overall appearance is light. Tail: thick. It is carried erect and curled inward.
