This event is recorded in Exodus 10 as one of the plagues against Egypt preceding the Exodus. God brought a thick darkness over the whole land of Egypt for 3 days. The darkness was described as so thick it could be felt. The Egyptians could not see each other nor leave their homes. However, the Israelites had light where they lived. Pharaoh told Moses to take the Israelites and go worship God, but to leave their flocks and herds behind. Moses refused. After the 3 days of darkness, Pharaoh agreed to let all the Israelites and their livestock go. Biblical scholars see the darkness as a judgment on the Egyptian sun god Ra, as well as pressure on Pharaoh to release the Israelites from slavery. The darkness plague demonstrates God's power over the forces of nature and the gods of Egypt. It was part of His plan to free His people from bondage through the Exodus.
