This was the sixth plague God inflicted on the Egyptians after Pharaoh refused to let the Israelites leave Egypt. Moses and Aaron were commanded by God to take handfuls of soot from a furnace and sprinkle it toward the sky in front of Pharaoh. The soot turned into fine dust that caused festering boils to break out on the skin of the Egyptians and their livestock. The Egyptian magicians were afflicted with boils as well and could not stand before Moses due to the pain, showing their powerlessness against God's plagues. While the Egyptian people suffered great pain from the boils, the Israelites in Goshen were spared from this plague, revealing God's protection over His people. Pharaoh's heart was hardened after this plague as well, refusing to give in to Moses' demand to let the Israelites go worship their God in the desert.
