Their cheap lives were consumed even more cheaply, like insects, and they were simply wasted. If the battlefield is hell on earth, then these survivors were in field hospitals, which were even hellier. They were crammed together like rotting meat lined up in front of a butcher's shop that couldn't be sold, and they were given no proper medical treatment as they waited for death.
