The Duchy of Huron Article DRAFT PUBLIC Situated along the fertile eastern shores of Lake Huron lies the Duchy of Huron. A land of abundant natural resources supporting small villages sustained through fishing, farming and maritime trade. Ruled by Duke Beaubois from his Harbor Hall estate. Huron’s lengthy Lake Huron coastline provides rich fishing banks supplying local markets and inland towns with prized catches of whitefish, trout, salmon and sturgeon. Homesteads emerge along the shore growing vegetables, grains and keeping livestock. Wood lots and interior forests yield quality timber. The Lake also facilitates trade with other Great Lakes kingdoms. Merchant ships export timber and dried fish southward while ferrying back fine cloths, leathers, weapons and exotic goods from overseas ports. Coastal lighthouses guide vessels through storms and fog. Most peasants dwell in humble thatched cottages clustered into hamlets along the shoreline. Winters bring difficult isolation amidst blizzards and frozen harbors. So community life centers on the local parish - providing schooling along with spiritual and social solidarity through the long cold seasons. Though lacking great wealth, Huron’s vital lakeside villages supply essential food and facilitate maritime trade with regional partners - thus supporting allied kingdoms through the annual cycle of seasons.
