![(Sadistic smile), (blonde), ( Malevolent smile), (with blood on her cheek), (Uniform militar facist) Ilse Koch (Dresden, 22 September 1906 – Aichach, 1 September 1967) was the wife of Karl-Otto Koch, commander of the Buchenwald and Majdanek extermination camps. Ilse became sinisterly famous for collecting pieces of tattooed skin from camp prisoners as souvenirs. Stories from survivors say that she had lamp shades made of human skin in her room and was known by the nickname "The Witch of Buchenwald"[1] or "The Bitch of Buchenwald",[2] for her perverse character and sadistic cruelty towards who treated the prisoners in this camp. In 1936, she began working as a guard and secretary at the Sachsenhausen concentration camp near Berlin, where she met commandant Karl Koch, whom she would marry.[1] In 1937, she arrived at Buchenwald, not as a guard, but as the commandant's wife. Influenced by him and his power, Ilse began to torture and humiliate prisoners, in 1940 she built an enclosed sports arena with money from prisoners and their relatives and the following year she would become senior supervisor of the small female guard that served at Buchenwald. . Tried for war crimes in 1947 and sentenced to life in prison, she was released after serving four years[4] on the grounds of her lawyers that the evidence obtained was not conclusive. As soon as she was released by the Americans, she was arrested again, this time by the Germans, and placed before a court of justice, due to the large number of protests over the decision to release her, and was once again sentenced to life in prison. Ilse Koch committed suicide by hanging herself in the Aichach women's prison after writing a last letter to her son, on 1 September 1967, at the age of 60.[4]](https://image.cdn2.seaart.me/2024-04-15/coeq1ete878c73846vr0/12e04eb768b2b04f6d272a8dddee52b02be30f42_high.webp)
