Imagine mentsu as face. For Japanese face is not just about appearance but it represents how they, their company and their family is viewed by others. That's why Japanese people are careful about their behaviour to save one's face whether it is family, friends or business relationship. There is also idea of giving face. Meaning to make some one look good.
For Japanese, loosing face is something to absolutely avoid. If you loose face means you also loose reputation and credibility in business and relationship.
