Painting of a man in a boat on a lake with a forest in the background

The Duchy of Alger Sitting along the kingdom's northernmost shores, the Duchy of Alger is a land of rocky coasts, dense forests, and long, brutal winters. Ruled by House Bergeron from their towering timber castle, Seacliff, Alger provides lumber, furs, fish, and stone to the realm. The vast majority of Alger is dominated by thick pine and spruce forests, source of most of its timber wealth. Teams of lumberjacks harvest trees for shipbuilding, construction, and for export to other duchies. The woods also teem with fox, beaver, bear and other animals bearing valuable furs. Alger's coastline along Lake Superior is treacherous but filled with fish like whitefish and trout. Brave fishermen in their Mackinaw boats do battle with fierce autumn storms to bring their catches to market. Inland, ancient volcanic rock is quarried to build strong keeps and fortresses. Travel is difficult in this heavily-forested and lake-bound land, especially in the long winters when paths are buried under snow. But the hearty Algerians are used to looking after themselves in isolation until spring comes again. Their own distant council and baron holds sway over local issues. Life is hard in Alger, but House Bergeron's leal vassals provide sturdy timber, warm furs, and fine fish that help sustain the whole kingdom in exchange for their old northern liberties.
