Arafed man kneeling on a step with a water spout in his hand

In the heat of the day, Ali ibn Abi Talib, the fourth caliph of Islam, sat by a well. He was tired and weary, and his heart was heavy. He had seen too much suffering in his lifetime, and he felt the weight of the world on his shoulders. Ali looked down into the well, and he saw his reflection. He saw the lines of age on his face, and he saw the pain in his eyes. He felt like an old man, even though he was still young. Ali sighed and spoke to the well. "O well," he said, "you have seen much in your lifetime. You have seen people come and go, you have seen joy and sorrow, you have seen love and hate. "I am like you, O well. I have seen much in my lifetime. I have seen the rise and fall of empires, I have seen the birth and death of civilizations, I have seen the good and the evil of humanity. "I am tired, O well. I am weary of the world. I am weary of the suffering, the injustice, the hatred. "I wish I could just disappear, O well. I wish I could just sink into the ground and be forgotten. "But I know I cannot do that. I have a duty to my people. I have to lead them, I have to protect them, I have to guide them. "So I will keep going, O well. I will keep fighting for what is right. I will keep trying to make the world a better place. "But I will never forget you, O well. You are my friend, you are my confidant. You are the one who listens to my pain." Ali sat by the well for a long time, talking to himself. He poured out his heart, and he felt a little bit better. He knew that he was not alone, that there was someone who understood his pain. When it was time to go, Ali stood up and looked at the well one last time. "Thank you, O well," he said. "You have been a good friend." Ali turned and walked away, leaving the well behind. But he knew that he would never forget it. The well would always be there for him, to listen to his pain, to offer him comfort.
