![The Temple is a short story by H. P. Lovecraft written in 1920 . The story is written in the form of the last account left on 20 August 1917 by Count Karl Heinrich Von Altberg-Ehrenstein, commanding officer of the German submarine U-29. The report recounts the mysterious events following the discovery, on the body of a sailor from an English ship torpedoed by U-29, of a small ivory sculpture depicting the head of a deity. After this episode, madness takes hold of the crew members (minus the commander and his direct subordinate Klenze), flocks of dolphins accompany the submarine in its drift towards the South and finally even Klenze goes mad and begins to rave about the alleged recall of a terrible and inexorable force.
Left alone in the submarine (all the others committed suicide or had to be killed), Count Von Altberg-Ehrenstein is dragged to the bottom of the ocean, where the U-29 lands in the center of a large and ancient submerged city . Now certain of the impossibility of receiving help, and having exhausted the last supplies and energy reserves on board the U-29, the commander writes his report and finally, protected by a diving suit, sets off towards the enormous temple from which comes the light of "a large flame lit on an altar in the deep recesses of the building"[2].](https://image.cdn2.seaart.me/2024-07-12/cq8pjjde878c7398de80/c774e7369734f964f84e39231ddf78be0528fbaa_high.webp)
